Investigations on the Dark Web

The Dark Web is an online place where people can operate anonymously. It is a place where people secretly share their ideologies, good and bad, and where business is never far from a crime.

In this session, I will show you real-world examples of what is traded on the Dark Web and demonstrate that true anonymity is actually quite difficult to achieve. By combining the right pieces of information and using state-of-the-art data analysis, law enforcement is able to identify criminals and prevent serious crimes like weapon trading and child sexual abuse.

Twenty years ago, Mathijs Homminga studied Artificial Intelligence at the RuG. He is co-founder and CTO of Web-IQ, a Groningen based Online Intelligence company. Web-IQ has 35 employees, offices in Groningen, Amsterdam, Madrid and Vancouver and assists law enforcement agencies across the world in their fight against serious crimes.
